How to choose the Makeup Sponge

You could use the best foundation in the world, but if you don't have the right tools to apply it, it will look cakey, streaky, or just plain meh. This is where makeup sponges come in handy. What began in triangle form when dinosaurs roamed the earth (or shortly after), has now taken on rounded curvy new shapes and colors. But what exactly is the distinction between them all?

1. Makeup Sponge Triangle

The triangle sponge was part of the very first generation of makeup sponges. They're disposable, so they're ideal for the lazy girl on the go (or the lazy girl who isn't going anywhere but doesn't want to clean her makeup). They do the job, but their rigid lines and points make it difficult to distribute product evenly when compared to curvier options. While these are the least expensive of the bunch, they can quickly add up if purchased repeatedly.

2.Blending Sponge for Makeup

This curvy overachiever is made with bamboo charcoal, which draws pollutants from the skin as you dab and blend. It also has a small divot for more precise application. Holding from the round bottom results in a softer application, whereas gripping from the ridge of the sponge results in a more intense application.

3. Makeup Sponge with Fleece

This one is ideal for powder products, particularly mineral makeup. The kabuki-style brushes that are commonly used for this type of application can produce a heavy finish. In a high-shine situation, this flocked sponge is ideal for buffing down a powdery finish or dabbing on loose powder.

4.Beautyblender Micro Mini

Aside from being cute (it's about the size of an almond! ), this little guy is also quite useful. It functions similarly to a detailer for the small areas around the eyes and nose. It's also a good idea to apply cream highlighter to the cheekbones, brow bones, and nose bridge.

5.Beautyblender

You've probably seen the iconic original pink egg-shaped sponge by now. With good reason, it's a favorite among makeup artists, beauty editors, and the general makeup-loving population. The latex-free foam ball applies a seamless coat of liquid, gel, and cream formulas to the skin, leaving it flawless rather than clumpy and coated. The rainbow of colored Beautyblenders, which are now available in nude, black, white, red, and purple, are purely cosmetic. Flesh tone products, as well as darker foundations, bronzers, and cream blush, are less visible with a nude sponge, as they tend to stain the lighter sponges. It doubles in size when wet, and the level of wetness can help you control the level of coverage.

6. Conical Sponge

This latex-free sponge appears to have had a slice taken out of the side, which is what makes it such a versatile tool. The sponge's broad, rounded side is ideal for applying foundation and bronzer. The tapered end is useful for detailing, while the flat side is ideal for contouring with creamy products. If you like to spend extra time polishing your skin, this is a great all-in-one tool to help you do so.
