There was a time when many women primarily used makeup brushes. However, after the invention of beauty sponges, many women switched to using these colorful eggs.
Indeed, we can't compare ourselves to professional makeup artists who create complex looks. Often, we only need a simple base makeup, especially for beginners. Makeup brushes can be challenging for novices, but a good beauty sponge is a godsend. It's easy to apply makeup with, and it feels comfortable and fun.
As beauty sponges became more popular, the market became flooded with various types of them. So, how do you choose a good beauty sponge? Let me explain."
"1. About the Material of Beauty Sponges:
Currently, there are only two types of materials for makeup sponges on the market: latex and non-latex. This includes flat sponges, beauty sponges, and cushion sponges, all of which come in latex and non-latex materials.
Before 2010, latex was indeed the mainstream material for makeup sponges. However, it has gradually been replaced by non-latex, specifically hydrophilic polyurethane materials. Latex sponges contain latex, which is an allergen and can cause allergies. Additionally, latex sponges tend to shed. Both cushion sponges, initially invented in South Korea, and beauty sponges, created by American makeup artists, have always used non-latex materials.
How to distinguish latex from non-latex?
It's simple—just soak them in water. Latex material won't expand when wet, while non-latex material will! (Some claim to import latex beauty sponges that expand when wet, but I can assure you that it's impossible. They probably imported latex beauty sponges from another planet that expand in water!)
In fact, a crucial criterion for judging the quality of a beauty sponge is its water rebound ability. In general, a beauty sponge that quickly rebounds and has good performance when water is squeezed out (regardless of pore size) is less likely to absorb makeup. Sponges with larger pores and relatively lower density feel softer and grip more product, making them suitable for thick-textured products like foundation creams, foundation pastes, and concealers. Those with smaller pores and greater density feel firmer and are relatively suitable for thinner products like liquid foundations, BB creams, and primers.
Note: Currently, there are only two types of sponge materials on the market—latex and non-latex. Only non-latex sponges expand when wet! Remember to choose a non-latex beauty sponge to avoid allergies, shedding, and for durability."
"2. Differences between High-Quality and Low-Quality Beauty Sponges:
Characteristics of high-quality beauty sponges:
When dry, they feel incredibly soft, skin-friendly, not hard or rigid. They have a full and elastic texture.
They have strong water-absorbing abilities, expanding to twice their original size when wet. When lightly squeezed in your hand, water is easily released (making them less prone to drying out and molding, isn't that great?). They have excellent rebound capabilities. Moreover, high-quality ones are extremely lightweight and compact, unlike some other products that remain heavy even after squeezing out water.
Characteristics of low-quality beauty sponges:
Pores are not clearly defined, and they feel stiff, like small rocks, or they are overly sponge-like, lacking elasticity.
Poor hydrophilicity, making it difficult to absorb water when soaked. Even after squeezing out water, they have poor rebound capabilities.
They have excessively large pores and consume a lot of product.
They have nearly no pores, are very firm, and do not absorb product. However, they also lack adherence and can make makeup look unnatural.
About Using Beauty Sponges:
Foundation
Apply an appropriate amount of foundation on your forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks. Use a damp beauty sponge to gently pat and blend the foundation from the inside out. The pointed end can be used for areas like the sides of the nose, under the eyes, and corners of the mouth. (Alternatively, you can squeeze foundation onto the back of your hand, rub it into a coin-sized shape, and then use the beauty sponge to pick up and apply the desired amount.)
Blush
Use the base of the beauty sponge to pick up blush and lightly dab it on the apples of your cheeks or blend it upward at an angle. Likewise, you can use a darker shade of foundation to contour and highlight by applying it with the beauty sponge. If you accidentally apply too much blush, lipstick, highlighter, or contour, use the large round end of the beauty sponge to blend and remove excess makeup.
Concealer
The pointed tip of the beauty sponge is perfect for applying concealer. Apply concealer to the areas that need coverage, and then use the beauty sponge to pat and blend it. This application method results in a natural and lightweight finish.
Makeup Removal
Beauty sponges are excellent for removing stubborn makeup. You can dip the pointed end in makeup remover and use it to clean the corners of your eyes, corners of your mouth, and other areas. During makeup removal, the beauty sponge also gets cleaned in the process, providing a dual benefit.
Eyebrow Shaping
In many cases, after applying eyebrow powder or using an eyebrow pencil, the color may not be evenly distributed. Gently pressing the beauty sponge on your eyebrows can remove excess eyebrow powder and make your eyebrows look more natural.
Applying Skincare Oil
Skincare oils applied directly to the face can sometimes be difficult to absorb or make the face look oily. Using a beauty sponge to apply skincare oil can prevent this effect.
About Cleaning Beauty Sponges:
Cleaning Frequency: It's recommended to clean them every 5-7 days.
Cleaning Tool: You can use makeup sponge cleanser or soap, which is the cleanest and most economical tool for cleaning makeup sponges.
Cleaning Method:
Wet the beauty sponge, apply cleanser to it, and then gently squeeze it, being careful not to damage it with your nails.
Continue to gently squeeze while using the foam from the cleanser to remove any makeup residue inside the beauty sponge. If necessary, you can apply cleanser again until the water squeezed from the beauty sponge is clear.
Gently press to squeeze out excess water and then use a clean towel or tissue to absorb any remaining moisture. Place it in a cool, well-ventilated area, and avoid direct sunlight.
One more thing, I recommend replacing your beauty sponge every three months if you use it daily. Also, if you notice any cracks in your beauty sponge, it's time to replace it with a new one."
